The weather we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived, well more or less and there’s no better way to catch up on our Vitamin D intake than with a glorious swim out in the sunshine.

While we are all familiar with the various lidos and indoor pools around London, Catwalk Schoolgates decided to find something a little more interesting to dip our feet into.

King’s Cross Swimming Pond90-KC-web-15-528x330Aptly named “Of Soil and Water”, the King’s Cross Pond is a truly interactive art installation situated right in the center of the King’s Cross development site. As the UK’s flagship man-made natural swimming pond, the 40m pool is part of a LandArt series that aims to encourage a different perspective on a rapidly changing and developing area. The pond is naturally filtered and is surrounded by flowers and natural grasses that change with season.

According to the King’s Cross Pond Club website, “The installation aims to make us think about the relationship between nature and the urban environment – the permanence of buildings and the changing nature of undeveloped spaces”.

“Of Soil and Water” will only be open for two years – remember, it is still a fantastic example of experiential art as well as a lovely place to swim. We can only imagine the nostalgic recollections of the children who swim in the natural pool in years to come, once the area is built over and completely urbanised.

KingsCrossPonds_RG006-528x352If you’d like to make a day of it, we’d recommend packing a picnic basket full of goodies and making use of the luscious green space situated right next to the pond.

You can purchase tickets for designated sessions throughout the day, however remember you’ll need to book two weeks in advance as there are only 40 swimmers allowed at a time. Prices range from £3.50 to £6.50 for peak swims, and non-swimmers can visit the pond at a discounted rate.

Opening hours:

Monday-Friday from 6am-dusk; Saturday-Sunday from 8am-dusk.

Combine art and the outdoors this summer and book your day at the pond here.
