Day time tops you will actually wear

I love getting requests from readers and questions about tops are something that regularly comes up.  Therefore, I decided to tackle the subject today on the blog, albeit it’s not ground breaking advice!

Generally, I am too busy to worry about what top I wear and whether it fits under a jacket.  I also rarely get to sit down and eat or drink during the day so my spillage rate is high and this has ruled out all those delicate blouses and tops for me.

Sweaters and jumpers will be for another day as it is still warm enough to get away with a top.  I have personally made so many mistakes buying tops and when I reach for one in the morning, I realise that they are either too complicated or too uncomfortable, or given that I spend most of my day working in my office and then running around after the kids, just plain impractical.

Lets start with t-shirts as I wear mine all year round.  I have just invested in another Alexander Wang one in grey (easier to wear in the Winter and looks great with navy or black).  The t-shirts are £70 but they are indestructible!  I have toyed with others and Other Stories has some very similar ones for £35. I often just layer a Marks and Spencer cardigan over the t-shirt and under my jacket ( I keep one on the back of my chair in the office) there are lists and lists on Ebay.

This weekend I bought a couple of breton tops as they break up black and they are a no-brainer when you get dressed at six in the morning.  I have ordered one in navy and yellow from Petite Bateau and you can also find loads on Ebay.  I found a Maison Scotch on sale at Coggles – down from £70 to £28.

I could go on about silk shirts (I have loads but I never wear them as I am too messy).  I do love denim shirts and I have spoken before about these and also a plaid shirt, both of which I buy vintage.  Just check out my ASOS Marketplace Wish List or my Etsy One.

J Crew is awash with casual tops you will actually wear, I adore the shirt below but the brand is so expensive in the UK.  I do always keep an eye out for preloved.  Ebay has so many pieces – check the link to a very similar shirt brand new from J Crew for just £11.

One of my top tips and something I wear week in week out is a lightweight wool knit.  I think I found the best ones which are the Tippi from J Crew.  They are super comfortable and just the right weight for Winter.  Again you can find these on Ebay.  Also check out Arket, I love that they have such a small range of classic pieces and they also have a great merino sweater for £45.  I also spotted the J Crew ones on sales on Zalando.

Another easy piece is a blue shirt.  I had one made by Gormley and Gamble and it is by far the most beautiful shirt I own.

Another piece that I have actually worn is the t-shirt body by Alexander Wang.  It is long enough and doesn’t give you mum tum which I get with lots of other bodies.

Sweatshirts – keep them plain, you don’t need to spend a lot but go for a colour and replace them once they start to fade.  I would check out Arket as the quality is really fantastic for the £35 price tag.  The one below is from New Look and at £15 you cannot really argue.

I have bought loads of other tops but they just don’t get worn on a day to day basis.  I like to keep things simple now and know that I will actually wear what I buy.

Wishing you all a great week!

Love
