The key to shopping vintage is to have a clear idea of what you are looking for, check the trends, try to find an equivalent piece at a fraction of the original price and best of all, it will be unique. This season is all about florals, midi skirts and shirt dresses and this is what I search for when I head online or into a store. Don’t be worried if an item is too big as you can always have it altered and try to look for cottons, silks and linens, also, avoid acrylics.
Last week I headed to one of my favourite shops (worth visiting when next in London) SK Vintage. Not all vintage shops buy or edit as well as this store and Sarah will always find you a piece as she has a brilliant eye. Kate Moss uses SK Vintage and hardly buys anything new.
I brought along my friend, the Queen of Vintage Shopping, Deborah Sheridan Taylor. I have learned so much from her about what to look for when I head to a vintage shop.
Lots of my friends had dismissed vintage as they felt they were too old. You do, however, have to be careful about what you choose and you cannot wear it head to toe but the odd well chosen piece will lift your wardrobe. The dress Jane choose above is full on trend, it takes in ruffles and floral but in a grown up manner.
Shopping vintage is brilliant for when you want something new to wear but don’t want to spend a lot of money. I would rather check for a vintage piece than buy more high street. Most likely, no one else has the same piece, and you can end up trading up, getting better cuts and fabrics for your money.
SK Vintage is local to me but I am happy to support Overdress Vintage, Open for Vintage, Rokit Vintage, Modes and More and Peekaboo Vintage. Also, always check Asos Marketplace and Etsy not to mention Oxfam online.
Check out our top tips for shopping vintage on the video below I will be sharing lots more on Instagram and on my YouTube channel .
