The Spring EDIT – classic investment pieces at affordable prices

What a week!

I completely under estimated the upheaval of moving, even though we have moved half a dozen times before!

However, there are upsides to moving and one of them is being forced to examine your wardrobe and come face to face with all your mistakes, and yes, I still make them!  Less than I used to, but I still cannot help myself SHOPPING FOR SHOPPING SAKE.

It’s still the old problem of picking up something new which is ‘almost good enough’, I am brilliant at hoovering up the low lying fruit.   However, the house move has halted me in my tracks as my wardrobe space is a quarter of what I used to have and to be honest I think it is a good thing as there is no space for mistakes.

Last year in the sales I focused on dresses I could wear to an event so I didn’t have to panic shop.  I have my eye on a couple of skirts, dresses and trousers that I can wear in the day time.

It is so tempting to stay in jeans or joggers but when I see someone in a wonderful pair of trousers or a midi skirt or dress I know that this is the way to go.  With the sales around the corner it is time to identify a few pieces worth investing in.

These are pieces I adore and work with my body shape and lifestyle.  I cannot stress enough, it is crucial that you buy pieces that work for you.  This edit will show you the places I look and I have taken my time to look for pieces that you may not have seen already.

Do please try and avoid anything:

  1. Synthetic
  2. One hit wonders in manic florals and crazy colours.  These are Instagram traps, all the bloggers love them as it drives more likes
  3. The ‘in brands’, they will all be on sale next season when the fashion pack have moved on

Look for simple cuts, cottons mixes and keep the prints simple.  Also steer clear of maxi and embrace the midi length as it is more practical and less ageing.

Lets start with trousers, I bought these H&M trousers – so easy to wear (size up).

A great navy twill pair from Tibi on the Outnet or this pair from Derek Lam or for an evening event I would consider this pair from Palmer Harding.  I also have my eye on this pair by Isabel Marant or even this pair by Jil Sander as well as this option from Marni.  So many trousers are just too complicated (belts, anything too high waisted or culottes are not the easiest to wear on a day to day basis).

I spotted the simplest pair at KJ Laundry – they are by Masscob and definitely worth trying on; they are also online at Matches.

H&M also have a wonderful pair online now.

Moving onto skirts; look out for midi length, pockets and buttons – this shape is the most flexible.  I spotted a simple one from Vince  or Thierry Coulson, both of these are not too long or voluminous, great if shorter, though they do have a longer one too which is on my list.  This silk skirt by Vilschenko is brilliant for now or this one.

My favourite by far is by Toast, I hadn’t been in for a while but I am tired of COS and Other Stories as the fabrics and cuts are just too hit and miss.  Toast use the finest fabrics and this skirt is one of the best I have tried on this season.

I also love this one from Purification Garcia.

I adore Rhode Resort and the price point is truly fair, I have my eye on the  Sitara which is not my usual style but the fabric is divine and perfect for a Summer party.

I fell in love with Alison Boyd at Atelier 75   These are simple cotton dresses that will take you anywhere and again are a classic shirt dress shape that won’t date.

Another brand to have a look at is Sleeper (the dresses are brilliant on holiday as you can wear them day and night).  I also spotted a lovely cotton dress at H&M.

If you are looking for a grown up dress then check out Isabelle Fox – her dresses are well priced and well finished.

The key is to ponder and really consider when and how you would wear something and whether it will work with the rest of your wardrobe.  I have been to a few holiday Pop Up’s but I am wary as a lot of the dresses are too heavy for the Summer holiday and too over the top for the City.

I am off to try the Emiliana dress by the sublime Natalia Picariello her dresses are as good as top end designer brands yet a fraction of the price. She only uses the best silks and cottons and if you need anything special she is happy to help. Prices start from £90 to £320 .

This blog has taken a while as I only wanted to feature pieces that I have checked myself and didn’t want to go for the obvious.  I know how hard it is to find great quality clothing that doesn’t cost a small fortune.  The sales are around the corner so hold your nerve….and let me know what you think??
