How and when to shop ebay

How to shop Ebay

The key is to be specific when you head to Ebay, so I am going to work through my current searches and I hope it helps you find the treasures that I have.  Don’t get carried away, it is so easy to start bidding on lots of pieces and end up with a pile of other peoples rubbish!

This was a dress that Deborah had cut into a top

Currently on my list is

  1. Stella McCartney or Celine oversized knitwear
  2. A white silk bomber jacket (found this, can check it out on my Instagram)
  3. Vintage shirt dress or midi skirt

I was obsessed about finding a pair of Stella McCartney joggers and found the pair above on Ebay, I knew my size and style and it took me a week to find it.  The skirt below was a long shot, it only cost me £5 and I will wear it a few times and then re-sell for more.  It was styled so badly, no one wanted it, but I saw that with a great denim shirt the skirt would be so useful.

Top Tips

  1. Look out of season, as the prices are lower.  I want the oversized knits to throw over dresses as I hate coats over dresses.  I make sure that I get an up close picture and confirm with the seller that the knit has no piling.  Sellers have to accept returns if the item is not as described, so make sure you check the photos and the description carefully before you buy. I buy most of my cashmere on ebay  from Marks and Spenser.
  2. Jackets are so easy to buy on eBay and you just have to know your size and you can hunt by brand and colour.  Include foreign sites, I buy loads of J Crew and The Row from the US and brands like Sonia Rykiel from Germany
  3. Ebay is awash with dresses.   People are scared to buy them as they tend to be tricky with the sizing unless they know the brand.  I always buy bigger and have them tailored.  You have to be very specific on your search criteria. Yes, it takes time, but when you stumble on something it can be unique and no one else will have it. Look out for brands such as Frank Usher
  4. If you are buying an expensive item always email the seller to get them to confirm it is authentic and where they have sourced it from.  I always check the other pieces they are selling to see if it matches from a price perspective
  5. Also look for key word ‘bloggers favourite’ to get those sold out high street pieces but be careful that you don’t pay over the odds.  Always scroll down, as often the professional sellers appear first and they will likely charge more
  6. I sold my Gucci t-shirt, as what I really wanted was a vintage one, but I didn’t have the patience.  I will keep searching for vintage Gucci/Fendi and eventually I will find one that is unique
  7. If something is sold out or I don’t want to pay crazy money like those Givenchy fur slides I will look for a ‘lookalike’ on Ebay

I find that that urge for something ‘new’ is best satisfied on Ebay, rather than wasting time on high street  sites, as I tend to look for good quality brands.  I also focus on buying cottons, silks and cashmere. Look for green silk shirt, ruffle wrap skirt just be very specific and also sometimes I order most expensive first to remove the Chinese sites or just filter UK only.

If you would like Deborah and I to help you add to your wardrobe and show you how to use eBay email catwalkschoolgates@gmail.com and we can arrange this. We can also help you clear your wardrobe and sell what you no longer need.
